Hearing Health 2021 New Year’s Resolutions
As we ring in the new year, we reflect on the challenges and difficulties we faced from 2020 with a renewed focus and positive attitude for this new year. This year, we want to help you focus on communicating more fully with friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Here are our 2021 New Year’s Resolutions for people with hearing loss…
- Find Digital Ways to Connect. 2020 was a challenging year for socializing and gathering with friends and family. Our social gatherings were restricted, social distancing encouraged, masks enforced as a safety barrier and communication mostly virtual. And even though some of these challenges are ongoing, we’ve found a few ways to make communication easier. Try some of the following devices and video apps to socialize more with others this year: Google Duo, Zoom, Google Pixel Devices which can live caption all of your audio and video calls in real-time and Facetime on Apple devices.
- Optimize Listening Environments for Easier Communication. Many people with hearing loss find it hard to communicate in unfavourable listening environments. A few ways to improve this in the moment is to reduce background noise, have appropriate lighting to help with lip reading, spend social time in rooms in good acoustics. Did you know that rooms with soft furniture and carpets, such as living rooms, are easier to hear in than kitchens?
- Be an advocate. Focus on spreading awareness of hearing loss. Face masks can make communicating difficult for those with hearing loss, so stand up for others who might struggle not being able to read lips. You can help by encouraging others to speak slowly and clearly, do not yell and rephrase (do not repeat) when needed. If possible, invest in a mask with a clear mouth covering to aid in lip-reading.
